Pelvic Floor Health Program
Pelvic health is essential for a person’s overall well-being, but it is often overlooked until serious health problems arise. This program is designed to provide information about the most common pelvic health issues, their symptoms, and options for improving quality of life.
To ensure a comprehensive approach to treatment and rehabilitation, in addition to the proctologist, specialists such as a physiotherapist and urologist from the GASTRO CENTRS may be involved in the treatment process.
Childbirth injuries
A significant number of women experience hidden childbirth injuries after delivery. These can affect a woman’s quality of life by causing physical discomfort and emotional stress. Timely diagnosis and treatment help prevent long-term complications.
Symptoms:
- Urgent need to empty the bowel
- Gas incontinence
- Fecal incontinence
- Perineal (area between the anus and genitals) pain
- Dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse)
Signs:
- Staining of underwear or pads
- Asymmetry of the anal opening during voluntary or reflex contractions (for example, coughing)
- Low or completely absent anal sphincter tone during rectal examination
Varicose hemorrhoidal veins
Hemorrhoids are a common problem that cause discomfort, itching, pain, and bleeding.
Symptoms:
- Bleeding during bowel movements
- Itching around the anal area
- Fecal incontinence or staining of underwear
- Pain in the anal area
- Burning sensation in the anal area
- Palpable nodules in the anal area
- Heavy bleeding in the toilet bowl or on underwear
- Skin tags
Hemorrhoids can be either internal or external, and their treatment ranges from conservative methods, such as dietary and lifestyle changes, to medical and surgical procedures.
Anal fissures
Anal fissures are painful tears in the lining of the rectum that can develop as a result of prolonged constipation, diarrhea, or increased muscle tone.
Symptoms:
- Pain that starts during defecation or immediately after bowel emptying, lasting from a few minutes to several hours
- Patients often describe the pain as spasms or a sensation as if they are being “scratched with glass”
- Fear of defecation due to pain, which contributes to constipation and worsens the injury
- Minor, bright red bleeding from the rectum
Rectocele
Rectocele is a bulging of the anterior wall of the rectum toward the vagina, which can make bowel movements difficult and cause discomfort and a sensation of incomplete evacuation.
Bowel symptoms:
- Difficulty with bowel evacuation (feeling of incomplete emptying)
- The need to apply pressure to the vaginal wall or perineum to facilitate evacuation
- Constipation or straining during bowel movements
- Feeling that the stool is “stuck”
- Staining or leakage of stool
Vaginal symptoms:
- A noticeable bulge or pressure sensation in the vagina
- A feeling of fullness, heaviness, or discomfort in the pelvic area
- Vaginal looseness or widening
- Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse
- Difficulty inserting tampons
Other signs:
- Worsening of symptoms after prolonged standing, heavy lifting, or straining
- Relief after lying down
- The need to go to the toilet several times to completely empty the bowels
